Los Cerritos Wetlands preservation will move forward

A land swap to preserve part of Los Cerritos Wetlands will move forward after a divided Long Beach City Council voted Tuesday to have City Manager Pat West negotiate the deal. The deal has changed considerably since we first wrote about it here.

Many community members have voiced support for the deal, which includes important land once populated by the native Tongva people who inhabited the Long Beach and Seal Beach areas for many hundreds of years.

One supporter includes Jerry Schubel, president and executive officer of the Aquarium of the Pacific. "We have in this city an unparalleled opportunity, and perhaps it’s a responsibility, to create a model for other urban coastal cities," Schubel said. "It will be humans who will benefit the most by acquiring the Los Cerritos Wetlands and protecting them for future generations."  Read more
